Hey Everyone, We are about to embark on our Snow Ski Trip for the year. This trip will include several campgrounds within it and we will end back up at the Overton area that we just left from. So, go get a cup of coffee (I'll wait)....................you ready now???
Ok, so like I said, we are heading to Jackson Wy to meet up with our son Michael to go on a ski trip for his birthday. We have both a Timeshare and campground to stay in. That's right, we didn't think this through too well, we booked the timeshare, but somehow forgot we have a trailer and dog that we have to take care of too. So my plan is to stay with the dog in the trailer, and Terry will hang with Michael in the timeshare. We have to be in Jackson on the 22nd of Feb and it's the 19th of Feb now.
Our plan is to get up to Rock Springs WY and sit and watch the weather so we can move early if needed in case of a storm (because we don't really want to drive in bad weather.). Our first stop is High Country RV Park in Nephi UT (staying 19-20 Feb). There isn't much to say about the campground, just a basic place to sleep. And in this case, a basic place with snow on the ground to sleep. From there we hop up to Rock Springs WY at the KOA. The plan is to hang here until the 22 of Feb and then shoot up to Jackson.
The highs here in Rock Springs is in the teens to low twenties. That means we will be using a bit more propane. The low for the night was to be around zero. We haven't been in that cold of weather, but a lot of people state they don't have any issues down to the -25 degrees and even colder. It was windy here too. When we pulled into our spot, the RV right next to us had a huge ice dam coming out of there RV. I thought they abandoned the RV until it got warmer, but found out the person is still living it in. He just leaves really early and comes home late from work. Must suck for him. Glad it wasn't us. We made sure our fresh water tank was full and disconnected and put away our hose so it won't freeze. The area where our tanks are is heated from the furnace, but just in case, we also turned on all our tank heaters too. You can never be too safe.
While we are warm, let's talk about the campground. This looks like a nice campground, spots are too close to each other and they have a dog park (but we couldn't get into it. the snow was blocking the gate from opening. It was far enough away from the highway so you didn't hear too much road traffic. But it is a KOA and most KOA's we stayed at are nice parks that are near highways, train tracks or both. So the parks themselves are mostly nice, the noise level is usually very high and the parks themselves are usually the most expensive parks in the area.
So we made it through the night, staying warm and cozy. When we got up in the morning, we found out we had no water pressure. The water pump would run, but wouldn't give us any water. I knew our water line from the fresh water tank to the pump must have froze. Stupid Winter! Not knowing if it caused any damage or not, and the temps in Rock Springs aren't going to get any warmer, we decided to leave Rock Springs and head down to the Salt Lake area where it's warmer. But before we left, we had one of our propane tanks filled. I was impressed, it was like 5 degrees outside and the lady did it without gloves. Down in Brigham, the temps will be in the 30s during the day and low 20's to high teens at night. We can handle that.
Once we arrived at Golden Spike RV Park in Brigham UT. We were planning on staying here from 21-22 Feb (one night), but after looking, the temps in Jackson was going to be in the sub zero temps at night until Saturday (23 Feb) where it goes up to the 20's at night. So we decided to hang here another day and go to Jackson on the 23rd of Feb instead. So we called the campground in Jackson and they didn't have a problem with it. In fact, they just moved us to the right 1 day. So we didn't lose any money on that. Oh did I tell you, our water pump started pumping water again. I didn't see any leaks either, so we dodged a bullet on that one. (but I think that bullet is a wacky boomerang one}. As you will read soon.
This park is nice too. It's a small park but has all the stuff big parks offer...I guess. The noise level was about average too. Before we left here, we went to get our propane tank filled, but he wasn't able to do it. He couldn't get the connection to stop leaking. He said it was too cold for it...or he didn't know what he was doing. Especially since I just had a tank filled when it was 30 degrees colder. but what do I know. We ended up getting it filled down the road on our way to Jackson.
So off to Jackson we go. There are several ways to go, so we picked the hardest passable way to go. Or at least that is what I think. The way we went, we hopped on I-15, then turned on Hwy 30 to Soda Springs. From there, we made a left on Hwy 34 to Hwy 89 and into Jackson.
Most of the trip was good, but now let's talk about this little road called Hwy 34. Once we left Soda Springs, the roads were clear. it's a small road, but nice and smooth. We did notice that we were the only ones on this road. As we were going down the road, it started to snow a little, then a lot, then the road was covered in snow, then the truck was put in 4 wheel drive. For a while there, our speed would go from 25 to 5 and back to 25, then to 5 and so on. We kinda ran into whiteout conditions for about 30 miles. It did clear up a little and we were able to go over the mountain pass without issue. I think the snowboarders in that area was looking at us weird. I wonder why? Oh well. We were jumping for joy once we made it to Hwy 89. We like driving on plowed roads more than unplowed roads. We did see the bullet whiz by, but we were going so slow sometimes, that it kept misjudging our location.
We finally made it to Jackson and to our campground called Fireside RV Resort. Best that we can tell, the campground looks nice. But there was a lot of high snow walls everywhere to really get jist of the park. As you come into the park, they have cabins on both sides of the "two way" road. (I guess it might have been a real two way road if it wasn't for all the snow.) There was some tight turns to the campsite, and because of that, and that roaming bullet (ok, maybe me not paying enough attention), I ended up scraping against one of those snow walls. But since it was snow, I didn't think much of it...until I saw the damage. Anyway, we made it into our spot. The spot itself was narrow. Maybe because of the giant snow walls on both side of us. More about those stupid snow walls later. Here are some pics of our spot (or you can click on the picture to the right.)
So when I got out to unhook. I saw the damage. I tore the cover off the power plug, totally smashed in the water heater to a point that I couldn't even get the door open, and dented in the two storage doors and propane door. Oh and tore up the plastic trim on the slide. I was able to open the storage and propane doors, so all is good. Will deal with the rest when we get into warmer weather. Here are the pics for the damage (or you can click on the picture to the left.)
When Michael showed up, he tried to snuggle his toyota 4runner in behind the trailer. While doing it, he touched the snow wall with is tail light. The wall won...again. I guess that campground just didn't like us too much.
We were planning on staying here from 23 - 28 Feb and the temps will be in the 30/20's for high and lows with snow pretty much everyday. In fact, I think it snowed about 2 feet total while we were there. We had the Timeshare from 24-26 Feb. Michael was going to meet us there on the 23, but since we held back one day, he had no place to stay. He decided to head up anyway and sleep in his car. We let him know the low was to be about -10 that night, but he didn't care. He did survive the night. We were happy about that.
Both Terry and Michael enjoyed there skiing and snowboarding adventure. Michael went out two days and Terry only went out on the second day. Michael stated the powder was so deep, that in some places, it came up to his waist. Terry bought a ticket that only allowed her to do the green runs. It was way cheaper. But she said the green runs were way easier than in Colorado. My guess is if we go back, she might spring for the full ticket. Here is some videos of him having fun.
One night, we went and walked around town to check it out. On our way back to the timeshare, for some reason, I decided to do some dancing. That's right, I did a pirouette, and then some break dancing, finishing it off with a head bang. Or you could say I slipped on the ice and fell. I think I ended up with a mild concussion, cracked ass (maybe it was already cracked.), and broken glasses (lost a lens). So after that, they retired into the Timeshare and I drove back and retired (with my headache) in the trailer for the night. The next day I was fine, or at least finer.
On Michaels birthday, he wanted steak! So we headed to a steak joint called Gun Barrel Steak and Game house in Jackson. It was some tasty food. After that, we did some window shopping. Since the timeshare was done with, we all headed back to the trailer for the night. Michael headed on home the next day (27th) and we headed out the day after (28th)
Like I said we headed out on the 28th...or so we hoped. Before we could go anywhere, I had to get on the roof and clear a path through the snow to each slide, and then clear all three slides of snow and ice. Once that is done, we brought the slides in, hooked up the truck and tried to leave. Notice I said tried? It didn't work out that way. With the snow walls and narrow passages, I couldn't get the trailer out of the spot without either hitting the snow wall in front of the truck, or the one on the side of the trailer...either side actually. So after several attempts, and with the truck sliding sideways more than forward, we ended up having to put chains on. Luckily we bought those back when we were in Denver in the fall. That went pretty good since I never actually put chains on, just knew the basics on how to do it. But that didn't help us make the turn. We knew what we had to do...knock down and remove some of the snow wall on the passenger side spot. mainly about 2 feet of it. On top of that, there was someone right next to us, so we had to carry the snow to the spot on the other side of them. Terry had the gigantic shovel (2 foot long shovel) and I had the axe. Between me axing and her shoveling and us both carrying, we finally got enough snow removed and was able to make the turn out of there. Once we got to the access road, we took the chains off and headed for warmer weather. That's it. Nothing else to report.
Ok, so I lied. The trip back was just as bad as the trip to Jackson. We even took a different path, but that didn't help. We headed south on Hwy 191 to Rock Springs and then on I-80 back to Utah. We were also going to visit with our friend Rob, but that didn't happen either. We will meet up with him in the fall probably. Anyway, as we left town, we were privileged enough to drive on snow covered roads for most of the way to I-80 and again I got to test out my driving skills in whiteout conditions along the way. Here are some pics of the road back.
Once we reached I-80, we headed back to High Country RV Park in Nephi UT. Since we stayed there before, we knew what to expect. While we were there, we emptied the tanks and filled the fresh water tank...just in case. We stayed there for one night (28 Feb - 1 Mar) and then headed south to warmth. On the way down I-15, Terry tried to get some reservations in Mesquite NV, but they were all booked up because of some races in Vegas. That told us to just go boondocking. We headed to the boondocking area south of Overton again and stayed there for 10 days.
So how bad was the damage that I did in Jackson to the trailer? Can it be fixed? Can I fix it? I guess you will just have to keep reading to find out. See you in Overton...again.
