We arrived at John Gurney park in Hart Mi and plan on staying here from 4 - 7 Sep. When we got to our site, it had cement strips for our RV tires to sit on which was nice, except the power box was on the passenger side of the RV, and the power cable plugs into the driver side of the RV. Not to mention it was about quarter mile away from the trailer. So we had to move. They put us in the spot right behind the original spot, it it wa just grass, which is fine with us. At least our power cord now reaches, barely but it does reach. This site only had water and electric which we already planned for anyway so no big deal for us. While we are here, we plan on checking out some lighthouses and the sand dunes that are here.
So off we go to our first lighthouse of this stay. Called Big Sable Lighthouse, It's one of the tallest in Lake Michigan and like most of the lighthouses these days, they are no longer used. It was a in a state park and you have to walk about 1.5 miles to it. So when we told the ranger that is what we are doing, she made sure we knew it was a long walk to it. I guess she thought we might not be able to make the walk. But we did without issue. We actually planned on walking back on the shoreline, but the water level was way too high for that. Here are the pictures of this lighthouse.
Our next stop was the Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse. I call this the fun Lighthouse. We couldn't go into it, but the fun was really the walk to it. Check out these pictures and yes, we did get our feet wet on this one.
The next day we went on a sand dune ride. We thought about renting dune buggies and going out ourselves, but they cost around $300 to $400 for a half day, and the dune buggy ride cost $30. You do the math. So we hopped on the Mac Woods Dune Ride in Hart MI. They have their own section of the dunes that they lease. It was fun...not as fun as driving ourselves, but still fun. Here are some pictures of that.
Since we were in the area, we headed to Little Sable Lighthouse. We didn't pay to go to the top of this one, we just took some pictures and then headed to lunch...easier said than done. Not a lot of places to eat in small towns during the off season. But we found a place and then went home to get ready to head to Iowa to see Ed and Julie; a couple I knew from the Navy. I guess we will see you then.
