We arrived in Elephant Butte Lake state park and as we were looking for a place to boondock, we saw...or should I say didn't see the area that we camped at last time. That whole area was under water. The guard said the water was rising slowly, so we took that into account when looking for a place. We did find a place that looked over the water, while still being close to it (100 yards or so away). The ground of where we were at was solid, the ground by the water is really sandy. No need to get stuck down there. We planned on staying here from 15-26 Apr.
Here are some pics that were taken from the same spot. The one on the left was taken Nov 2018, the one on the right taken Apr 2019. If you zoom in, you can see our RV on the picture on the left.
There is about a hand full of people around the lake the day we came. We forgot about Easter weekend. Come to find out this is the largest lake in New Mexico and I guess everyone in New Mexico comes here for Easter weekend. During the weekend, they lined up all along the lakes edge. Some people got to line up along the edge several times (with the water coming up, they had to keep moving back.)
One of the things that I accomplished while here was, we got our mail...not just mail, it was the door's to the storage unit. So I spent a day replacing the trim and the two storage doors and propane door. Besides from the missing the decals (I have those too, but i'm holding off putting them on), that side looks pretty good. Here are the pics I took of that.
Like I said we had a good view of the lake and shoreline. So we sat outside and watched people get stuck left and right. We giggled. We didn't do much during the weekend because of all the people, but before the weekend came, we got the boat out and actually went and did some fishing. I hooked one that was sooo big, it wouldn't even fit in the boat. I think they are called Rockfish. In fact, I ended up cutting my line to let it go. Terry didn't catch anything. Terry just told me, that I needed to explain this "Catch" of mine. Well it was the large rocks on the land that I hooked. Now my fish story isn't as cool sounding as it was. We tried fishing one more time, but still no luck. But that's ok, still had fun paddling around the lake.
What did we take away from this camping spot? Sand. Lots and lots of sand. Well that's it for this stop. Heading to Albuquerque to visit with family, and then on to Colorado. See ya on the trip somewhere.
