Columbia Icefields Alberta - 2023

Good morning,

The rain finally stopped around 0430 in Banff.  I thought for sure I was going to have to tear down in the rain.  But we did wake up to a fresh coat of snow on the mountains.  Well, were heading to the Columbia Icefields in Jasper National Park from Banff.  We’ll be staying in the parking lot for the night.  Our travel window is between 0800 and 0900.  The distance is only 120 miles, but we have a tour scheduled for 1300, more on that in a bit.

There are a lot of pull offs along the route and I think I was directed to pull into everyone of them.  We did get to see a very large black bear on the side of the road, but wasn’t able to snap a picture (we zoomed by too quickly for Terry to get the camera). Here are those pictures.

It was a little smoky in the area, but nothing like the other day.  It was also mostly cloudy.  The drive was still wonderful, I think Terry almost ran out of film in her digital camera.

Once we arrived at the parking lot, we got unhooked and was ready for the next adventure. The parking lot wasn't very even either.  Today we are visiting the Columbia Icefield Glacier Skywalk (which was not near any Glacier) and we also took a snow buggy onto the Athabasca Glacier for a little walk about on the glacier.  That was cool, I guess.  It was like walking on snow that froze over.  But the area that we were not allowed to walk on, looked cooler; more ridges and crevasses.  We were more on a Glacier parking lot.  But people liked it and got to drink from a small river of glacier water.  To get there and back, we had to go down/up a 30 degree hill.  I tried to get a picture of it, but I don't think it did any justice to it. Here are the pictures of the glacier, parking lot and hill.

While we were here, one of the fellow RV'ers mentioned this app called GuideALong.  This is a audio tour app that has tours all around North America.  It works based off your GPS location.  when you reach a place it wants to talk about, it will just start talking (of course you have to start the tour first).  I wish I installed this app when we started the trip because it gave a lot of great information as you drive down the road.  So, if you go on a trip, check out the app before you go to see if there is a tour for you.

That was about it for here.  We are staying one night, so tomorrow, we head to Hinton, Alberta for a couple of days.  See ya then.
